This is a piece I wrote for the Young Australian Skeptics website, looking at myths about the moon, women and going into labour. Whilst not exactly “on topic” for a tech writer, what with my wife about to give birth to our first child, it was one of those interesting topics you occasionally stumble across and get enthused about.

Loved your article. Of course by your own argument you don’t negate the effect of metaphysical influences. Certainly socio-psychological influences would impact the chemicals and hormones. So perhaps not the moon per se, but a strong enough belief about the moon perhaps?
But well written. Well debunked. And even as a (thinking) Christian, I love your writing.
As a father of four daughters, and husband, let me just say that I wish women were as simple to understand as the tides
There’s a lot more irrational impact to come.
Always here to help as you need/want.

Thanks Roger
Certainly there’s no reason why metaphysics couldn’t play a part. Believe that you’re going to give birth strongly enough and perhaps your body will oblige – who knows? I guess from my perspective if such a correlation did exist and could be tested then it would cease to be metaphysics and become just plain ‘ol science.
But regardless – thanks for the comment! I’m certainly looking forward to having a daughter…may have to pick your brains at some point
Cheers,
James
James, you work at St Leonards??
My wife works there – Jenny Kerr (art dept).
Indeed! Small world
You going to be going to this talk on the 30th with the Skeptic Zone guys?
I’d like to, but the 30th is our official due date, so it’s not likely unfortunately. I may have my hands full
Very exciting. Make sure you get lots and lots of sleep so you both feel nice and relaxed. I learnt the hard way, i was converting a garage and working my backside off and suddenly she is in labour a week early. I have only recently stopped being tired! lol
