As a Windows admin, patching the systems in your care becomes one of those chore-like tasks which never, ever goes away. And the more products you have to support, the more patches there are.
The job is so tedious and boring (and no-one every thanks for you it) that it’s very easy to slip into bad habits like letting the patching regime slide or even stop altogether. And BANG! Something like Conficker comes along and you’re suddenly confronted with screaming users, lost productivity and awkward questions.
Microsoft do provide quite a few free tools like guidelines to help admins keep their fleet of workstations and servers up-to-date, like the Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer and Windows Server Update Services, but even then the job can seem overwhelming so it’s good to get a refresher and some advice on how to keep your systems protected without clocking up enough overtime to qualify for an extra salary.
